Los Baskerville / The Baskervilles

Prologue

Alexander was everything a Baskerville was expected to be.
In spite of his youth, he was an elegant, well-educated youngster, mature, organized, and knew everything about protocol an good manners. He also had a natural cunning catalysed by a charismatic personality that was hard to resist, the royal demeanour and sharp features of the oldest, noblest aristocracy and a magnetic charm that gave him, not being specially handsome, some kind of mysterious allure nobody could ignore. Truth be told, he never was a great student, but he compensated it with a different type of cleverness, rarer and usually less appreciated, which allowed him to easily adapt himself to the circumstances and take control of any situation.
Yes, Alexander was everything a Baskerville was expected to be.
But when that autumn evening he turned up at the main mansion of the family dressing a brand new, grey suit, dragging his clapped-out suitcases stained with mud, with the wet hair stuck to his forehead, the whole family, gathered in the lobby, only saw in his pale outline, silhouetted against the quivering light of the outside, the result of a terrible mistake with a nobody from East London.
His father, Edward Baskerville, was the heir of all the nobility titles of the family and the companies of the cadet branch, as well as a firm defender of marriage, devoted husband and father of two lovely yet flighty sons, the youngest of whom had just finished, with some delay though, his career. It would be hard to explain the shame Edward felt when, after so many years hiding the existence of that illegitimate descendant, after spending such amounts of money so not even his own relatives found out about his catastrophic slip, he was forced to uncover it himself and stand stoically the blind rage tabloids devoured the gossip with.
